A Trip to an Elderly Home

  6/30/2008:

On Friday, May 30th, the South Bay Adult Day Program staff, volunteers and students visited Zung Ziew Longevity Garden, a residential care facility for the elderly in Santa Clara, in an effort to give back to the community. The consumers sang, danced and demonstrated the use of sign language for the occupants and everyone had a great time. In fact, the entire performance was repeated twice because everyone was having such fun and the seniors wanted to participate as well. In turn, the elderly residents introduced a game they played to the consumers. The game involved kicking a large ball back and forth while everyone was seated around in a big circle, and was good training for coordination. The group had also brought some fruit, which was shared and enjoyed by everyone as time went on. In addition, the consumers offered some of their crafts, which were well received. Finally, to thank them for their efforts, the seniors sang a few of their songs for the consumers. Overall, this experience has proved extremely beneficial for the students, who now have a far greater grasp of what it means to serve their community. They were also invited for another trip, and they look forward to their next visit.

Successful SBADP Open House

  5/16/2008:

The very first FCSN SBADP Open House was held on 5/16, 2008, Friday, from 10AM - 1PM. Staff and volunteers set up and decorated the place really nicely with beautiful art display and delicious finger foods including sushi, cookies, cold noodle, and sandwich wraps made by students and staff.

Visitors, including parents, teachers, students, case workers, and administrators from various educational institutes and regional centers came. Vivian Chung, our South Bay Adult Day Program Manager had to do the power point presentation 4 times within the 3 hours of our Open House. Strong interests were shown to our programs.

FCSN SBADP is a community-based program which offers a very comprehensive curriculum for students age 22 and all the way through their senior years. Life lessons, activities, field trips, volunteer opportunities were all held at various sites so that the students get to be fully integrated with the community-at-large. 2.  fine motor skill training (origami, art & craft, paining);
3.  academic enrichment (math, reading, writing, spelling, computer, sign language);
4.  hobby and interests development (music appreciation, singing, performing for events such as FCSN fundraising gala);
5.  recreational activities (field trips to zoos, museum, plays);
6.  physical mobility training (learning to use public transport system);
7.  professional training (window cleaning, housecleaning, folding clothes, handling sale transactions at FCSN booth);
8. independent life skills training (grocery shopping, food preparation, cooking, money management, making deposit and cash withdraw at banks)

Payments for the Disabled

  3/26/2008:

Most people with disabilities are eligible for the Economic Stimulus Payments. We have discovered that MANY of NBRC clients will be eligible to receive these payments. The new law provides for payments to individuals who have a total of $3,000.00 or more in earned income, Social Security benefits and/or certain veterans payments.  Individuals with disabilities who normally do not have to file a tax return should file a tax return for 2007 to receive a payment in 2008.  Even if a person pays no income tax, but has a total of $3,000.00 or more in earned income, Social Security benefits, and/or certain VA payments, they could receive a payment of $300.00 ($600.00 in married filing jointly.)  They also could receive and additional amount of $300.00 for each child qualifying. If you are not required to file a 2007 tax return  but want to receive an economic stimulus payment, you should fill out and file the enclosed Form 1040A, or if you have access to the internet, file on-line for free by going to www.irs.gov You only have to fill in a few lines of information.  Take a look at the Form 1040A to see which lines need to be filled in.  This is not considered countable income to Social Security.  Contact your case manager if you have questions..
